I thought that it would be fitting for the first blog post for Aer Portrait be an introduction to what exactly Aer is and how it came to be. First and foremost, Aer Portrait is a photography brand dedicated 100% to the performing arts. Over the past couple of years I have been photographing more and more performers and shows with no real home for my work. Finally, with Aer I have a dedicated space to showcase my photography but also, to reach out into the performing arts community to collaborate with more performers and showcase their talents in creative and dramatic imagery.
Two years ago, a fellow photographer asked me to help him cover a show at a place called Louisville Turners Circus. After I gave a look of confusion and he explained that this circus was not full of exotic animals, clown cars, and the like. He explained that this was a circus full of aerialists, stilters, jugglers, fire eaters, and more! I agreed to shoot the show with him and after one crazy weekend of capturing hundreds of performers flying through the air, simultaneously showcasing strength and grace with each move, I was hooked. I knew very quickly that this was a direction that I wanted my photography to move into. Over the course of the last two years my relationship with Louisville Turners Circus and CirqueLouis has grown tremendously which, in turn, has opened my eyes to a larger community of performers in Louisville and the surrounding area.
While it began with capturing action shots during a live performance by Louisville Turners Circus, I knew that what I really wanted to do was work one on one with these incredible performers in order to truly capture their talents. This collaboration allows us to work together as a team, in full control of the set, to create stunning portraits that capture the talents and uniqueness of each performer. Aer Portrait was founded to reach out into this incredible community of performance artists and capture their talents in creative and dramatic images that beg to be hung on walls in their homes, gyms, and studios.
So that is the "origin story" for Aer Portrait in a very small nutshell. I'm excited to branch further out into the world of the performing arts with Aer and I can't wait to see what 2017 has in store for this new studio!
